The following is a list of typewriters which are and are not compatible with the D.I.Y. Kit. If you don't see your favorite model of typewriter on this list, don't fret -- the typewriters shown here are for illustration purposes only, and don't represent a comprehensive list of compatible typewriters. If you are unsure, just ask me.

UNDERWOOD PORTABLES:
Almost all Underwood Typewriters can be converted. The only exception is the Underwood "Noiseless", which is distinguished by the rounded bezel on its front and the doorknob-shaped chrome caps on its ribbon covers. (The Underwood Noiseless looks very different from other Underwoods, because it was actually designed by Remington.)

All Underwood desktop typewriters can be converted. However, the very popular Underwood 5 lacks an easy-to-find crossbar, so if you have an Underwood 5, email me first.

ROYAL PORTABLES:
All Royal Portables can be converted. However, their crossbar is in a different place than on most typewriters. It is in the very back of the machine, and you will need to cut a non-essential structural piece of the typewriter in half in order to access it. Email me if you have any problems modifying your Royal portable.

ROYAL DESKTOPS:
The very popular Royal #10 can be converted, but unfortunately many of the other Royal desktop models cannot.

NOTE: The Royal #10 is unique because it has a locking bar in the front of the machine that blocks the keys from depressing during transport. This locking bar, when removed and re-installed upside down, no longer blocks the keys when they are depressed but rather rotates downwards in response to them. In other words, the locking bar can be appropriated to act as a crossbar suitable for mounting the D.I.Y Kit electronics.

SMITH-CORONA PORTABLES:
All "Smith-Corona" portables can be converted, and almost all "Corona" portables can, too. The only exceptions are all of the Corona 3s and certain Corona 4s.

SMITH CORONA DESKTOPS:
Before its merger with Corona, the L.C. Smith & Bros company made some beautiful desktop models. However, due to their unique decimal keys, which bisect the crossbar, none of these desktops can be converted with the USB Typewriter Kit.

LC Smith Desktop - NO

REMNGTON PORTABLES:
All Remington portables can be converted, with the exception of the Remington "Noiseless", which is distinguished by the doorknob-shaped chrome caps on its ribbon covers. The Noiseless is the only Remington portable that cannot be converted with the D.I.Y. Kit.

All Olivetti Portables can be converted. I recommend removing the crossbar first (by removing the springs and screws attached to it), attaching the circuitry to the crossbar while it is detached, then reattaching it as a final step.

NOTE: I have never seen an Olivetti Valentine in person, but I assume it can be converted as well.

HAMMOND TYPEWRITERS
All Hammond Typewriters can be converted with the D.I.Y. Kit, but the crossbar is very tiny, and so it is a difficult modification. Email me first if you plan on converting an old Hammond.

SEARS/TOWER PORTABLES
Most Sears "Tower" Brand typewriters are basically re-branded reproductions of various Smith-Corona and Olivetti models. See Above.
